Nine Months Old Being a mum and going back to work gives new definition to the term “working full-time”. I barely have time to breathe, let alone anything else and I actually regard my arduous daily slog on the train as an opportunity to sit down for a while. By 8.30am every day I have washed, dressed, prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner for a nine-month-old, packed the baby’s bag for nursery, prepared formula, changed at least one nappy, applied make-up, packed a lunch bag for myself and Hubby, walked to the station, commuted to the City (dealing with the many misfits and throwbacks that use public transport) and plonked myself down at my desk with a cup of tea. I then do a full day’s work before leaving at 4.30pm to enjoy my commute home, a mad dash back from the station to spend as much time as possible with my darling girl, then get her washed, dried, dressed, fed and into bed before beginning on the preparation of food, bottles and clothes for the following day. And THEN I can think about preparing dinner and sorting any housework. And that’s on a good day when I don’t need to exercise or shave my legs…or go grocery shopping, or find time to get snot-flyingly drunk. That said my little girl is thriving and developing the most, ahem, wicked-cool sense of humour. She can crawl and stand, fall over, play actual games – like “pull the piece of cloth off Daddy’s head” and “try to pull down the Christmas tree every time mummy isn’t looking” and “wipe snot over anyone and anything”. Her little personality is beginning to shine through – she is feisty, raring to go, she won’t stay still and she has an attitude! Despite all my hopes to the contrary, she’s taking after me. Dammit. Still, she is part Dan, so there’s hope for her yet. I have never been so busy (or fat) in all my life. How can I run around London, do THREE 10-20 minute speed-walks a day, barely have time to eat but still be a porker? Every waking moment of my days are brim filled – even sitting here writing this now is eating into valuable housework and next-day-preparation time. So off I go to keep going. Talk about time of my life though…
