Week 14 – Monday-Sunday

Mon 26th September – Sun 2nd October 2005

Well Week 14 had its highs and lows. Monday to Wednesday were bad days. My ulcerative colitis was really bad and getting to work was a real struggle physically and mentally. I bought a 1-4 travelcard so that I wouldn’t have to walk as far to work from the station, and Hubby drops me off and picks me up at Leytonstone every day, which all helps to ease the commute.

On Wednesday morning I had my fortnightly appointment with my gastroenterology consultant and the news from him was generally quite bleak. Because of my ever worsening symptoms he suggested I go back up to 20mg of steroids, I was down to 5mg and only a few weeks from being off them altogether. Increasing to 20mg would mean I would be on them throughout my pregnancy and beyond, it would also mean that the baby would have to be weaned off steroids once it is born, as it would effectively be on the medication whilst in the womb. For me it would mean that I would have been on steroids for over a year, which increases my chance of diabetes during pregnancy and will mean I will need tests and treatment to strengthen my bones after the baby is born. Not the most heartening of news.

The same day I had an appointment with my homeopath. I always feel like I am being unfaithful to my consultant whilst I am with my homeopath, I always seem to be conspiring with him to keep the conventional medication low, to keep the surgeons at bay etc. It all feels very illicit. I agreed with my homeopath to stick to 5mg of steroids for at least two weeks whilst he tried to attack the problem with some aggressive homeopathic treatment. I left with a mountain of little white pills to be taken at different times on different days, and a little bottle of liquid to be mixed with brandy and taken with water once daily.

Thursday and Friday were busy days at work, but I somehow find the energy to deal with that now. This week is the first week where I haven’t felt so tired I could lie under my desk for an hour every afternoon, it’s easing. The nausea is also easing. And Thursday and Friday saw my best days that week for my UC, hardly any problems. Touch wood, fingers crossed, turn three times and bow to the East etc etc.

On Friday night we went to my mum’s for lasagne and my mum and I chatted about…knitting! Gone are the days where my mum and I would sit up to 1am drinking wine and talking drunken rubbish – now we are sober and discuss the latest purl stitch designs. Rock And Roll. I hope we snap back to normal post-pregnancy! Though I am knitting a rather attractive blue sparkly ribbed scarf…see Bumpwatch for the evidence!

On Saturday Hubby took me shopping with our limited funds and bought me a new bag in Primark - £4! God I love Primark. I could buy their entire pyjama stock. We went to our friends Simon and Tony’s for dinner on Saturday night, and they invited their other friends who have a six-month-old baby. That was interesting, though I still think I am crap with children. Babies yes, toddlers no. Hubby’s great though, he even knows all the names of the Tweenies.

On Sunday I went with a girlfriend to see the new Pride and Prejudice, which despite Kiera Knightly’s constant and over-the-top pouting, is actually very good. And Mr Darcy fulfills all expectations. The guy who played My Bingly was great, and the girl who played Jane was much less wet than the one in the BBC version. Hang on a minute, I’m slowly turning into Jonathan Ross here…

On Sunday night Hubby and I treated ourselves to a pizza and snuggled up watching DVDs. The slight bump in the Week 14 picture may be pizza and not baby…
