Week 16 – Monday-Sunday

Mon 10th – Sun 16th October 2005

The working days of Week 16 were pretty hellish. Monday and Tuesday passed fairly uneventfully but it was on Wednesday that things went a bit crazy.

The day started with a trip to see my gastro consultant at the hospital. My colitis has worsened rather than improved since increasing my steroid dosage to 20mg. He suggested to just keep going as I was and to see him again in two weeks. This is fair enough I guess, but the fact that he now wants to see me every two weeks rather than every four reminds me that I am officially ill again. And boy do I feel it. Every morning I wake up with the usual stomach pains and problems, the other medication I am on makes me nauseous and tired and I feel as though I am constantly living just outside real life. I so want to snap out of this bubble and join in with the human race. I have already started plotting in my head how much better life would be if I had the operation to have my entire lower intestine removed. I can’t believe I’m even considering it, but illness drives you to extreme things I guess.

When I got into the office after my hospital visit it was around 10am and time to begin the…Office Move. Because we have two new people joining our floor, and we need to make extra space for filing as well as getting rid of some old cabinets etc, we had to plan a move-around to get the best use of space. My colleague and I had measured up the office and drawn up a plan. But, as we all know, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. Eight hours later we had finally worked out a new plan when we discovered the original one wouldn’t work and moved all the desks, filing cabinets and other office paraphernalia into place. It was a long stressful day with lots of conflicting opinions. I wasn’t allowed to help with any of the moving of furniture in my “delicate state” so I felt a bit useless standing around pointing at where things should go. Others didn’t help at all, just complained a lot about things and were generally unhelpful. All in all it would’ve been a lot easier for everyone if we had paid a load of burly men to come in and do it for us. It was a such a stressful day that all I wanted to do when I got home was down a bottle of wine, but I had to settle for a warm bath and a good book instead.

Thursday was a much better day, the office looked great and everyone seemed happy. I bought everyone some choccies to say thanks for helping and the atmosphere was relaxed and productive after the mayhem of the day before.

By Friday the events of the middle of the week caught up with me and I was totally wiped out. Sitting at my desk I couldn’t concentrate on anything and I kept getting an annoying gurgling sensation just below and left of my belly button. Then I worked out that the gurgling wasn’t gurgling at all, but the baby moving. I felt the baby moving! This was very exciting as it reminded me that there was actually something in there. Even though I don’t look pregnant, I don’t particularly feel pregnant now the all-day nausea has gone. Though Hubby would probably say I am acting pregnant with my raging hormones and sudden mood swings.

Saturday was a busy day. Hubby took Willy (our little red Nissan Micra) to the hospital (Kwik Fit) for a minor procedure (exhaust fixing) and I waited in for the NTL guy to come and sort out our modem. Then at 11am my Dad, my stepmum and my sister arrived and we all went into Wanstead for some tapas. It was lovely to see everyone and catch-up over tortilla and meatballs, and my Dad even seemed touched by the tiny little outfits we had bought for the new addition to the family to wear home from the hospital.

On Saturday night we drove down to East Dulwich to meet up with Lee and Erica for some Mexican food and a glass of wine (bliss!) We lasted until about 9.30pm before I was yawning my head of and ready for bed, so we headed off through the scary South London traffic towards home and bed. I was out like a light by 10.25pm.

Sunday started with a few hours of watching birth programmes on Discovery Home and Health and scaring myself silly. Hubby took the week sixteen picture before scooting off to footie. I look a bit manic in the photo actually.

So Week 16 at last comes to an end. Some books say that Week 17 is the start of Month Five, some say it doesn’t start until Week 18. But we’re more or less in Month Five now at least!
